Polymer Welding

Lasers open new horizons in the technology of polymer joining.

There is an increasing trend to find reliable and cost effective methods to join plastic parts together. Traditionally polymer welding is done with ultrasonic welding equipment. However, this technology has following characteristics

  • special fixtures required
  • on-line process control difficult
  • quality issues with debris and power control
  • limitations to design

Lasers are considered a challenge to ultrasonic equipment and overcome it's limitations. For example in welding with ultrasonic equipment, sensitive electronic components cannot be placed too close proximity of the welding seam. With laser welding this limitation is much relaxed.

Corelase offers a compact, flexible and efficient solution for polymer welding.

In laser welding the basic idea is to use overlap welding, where laser light penetrates the upper layer and is absorbed by the lower layer.
